The Social Security Fairness Act is being talked about again after it was brought up last month at a field committee hearing for the U.S. Senate’s Finance Subcommittee.
Senate Bill 597 is a bi-partisan bill. There’s also a U.S. House of Representatives version (H.R. 82).
This bill has a huge impact for Ohio public employees who paid into Social Security. The bill would repeal both the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) ensuring those who have earned Social Security will not receive a reduction.
A quick recap on WEP and GPO:
The WEP reduces a pension member’s social security benefit they are eligible for, if they receive a benefit from an employer that did not withhold Social Security taxes.
The GPO reduces Social Security benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also receive a government pension.
The argument being made for the repeal is if you’ve paid into Social Security, you’ve earned the benefits, regardless of if you’re an Ohio public employee. Another way the bi-partisan group is leveraging this is by referring to the workforce crisis happening in public service.
We are all aware of how slowly the government moves when it comes to bills like these. So far, a total of 59 Senators has signed the bill, along with 322 congressmen on the U.S. House version of the bill.
The Social Security Fairness Act started in 2023, and we suspect it could continue to be a long-drawn-out process. A repeal would be a major win for those of you who have earned enough credits to be eligible for Social Security.

Last quarter we highlighted Adam Grant’s book, “Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know.”
It was a good read, highlighting the importance of rethinking and unlearning in a rapidly changing world. The idea of having the ability to question and revise our beliefs is crucial for personal and professional growth.
The book is structured around three key areas: Individual rethinking, interpersonal rethinking, and collective thinking.
Here are the main points:
1. Individual rethinking:
Challenge Your Own Views: Grant emphasizes the importance of being open to changing your mind and not clinging to outdated beliefs. This involves recognizing the limits of your knowledge and being curious about what you don’t know.
Think like a Scientist: Adopt a mindset where you form hypotheses and seek out evidence to test them, rather than trying to confirm pre-existing beliefs.
2. Interpersonal Rethinking:
Persuade and be Persuaded: Engage in conversations with others to exchange ideas and perspectives. Approach disagreements with the goal of learning rather than winning.
Motivational Interviewing: Use techniques from motivational psychology to help others open up to change. This involves asking open-ended questions, listening, and encouraging self-reflections.
3. Collective Rethinking:
Cultivate a Learning Culture: Create environments, whether in workplaces or communities, that value continuous learning and improvement. Encourage feedback and celebrate flexibility and innovation.
Embrace Psychological Safety: Foster an atmosphere where people feel safe expressing their ideas and doubts without fear of retribution. This leads to more honest and productive discussions.
There were several engaging stories and research findings to illustrate his points, showing how rethinking can lead to better decisions, stronger relationships, and greater activity. He also provides practical strategies for individuals and organizations to cultivate the habit of rethinking in their daily lives.
For those of you wanting to read something different and interesting, put this book on your reading list!
